99% of every major artist has started out as an opening act. The audience for a major artist can be the exact audience you need to hear you, and being an opening act is the perfect platform. But you have to take advantage of the opportunity and follow these guidelines:
1. You want to make sure you have similar music to what the major artist is going to perform. You can't open up for Kirk Franklin performing gangsta rap. That will hurt you more than it will help your resume.
2. You want to keep your performance as true to yourself as possible. This is your first impression for a lot of 'mainstream' music consumers so you don't want to give them somebody that's not you.
3. Also, don't perform full original songs. Try to do a medley of snippets.. enough to give the audience a taste of what you offer. This like a commercial, and the audience has to come to your own show to see the whole movie.
4. Make sure your image is in tact... come out looking like a star. Be yourself..just enhance it!
5. Make sure your management team (or just a friend) is doing their job back stage... he/she should be talking to the management of the major artist, booking agent, and basically everyone else back there. They can pass out music and try to get future bookings... all while you're lighting up the stage.
6. Last but not least, make sure you announce your website and any other marketing slogans to the audience. You want to tell them where they can find you, get your music, and see you perform LIVE.
Once you have all these down, your opening acts will turn into investments and be a part of your strategic plan to become the main act. Happy recording.
