Ever heard a CD where the artist sounds real upfront on ballads and back in the mix on uptempo songs? Well your engineer could take care of that using EQ's/Compression and such, but it may be easier just to try this:
For ballads, come close to the mic when you record. You don't have to sing all loud and stuff, just sing to the mic like your singing your lady or your guy... all of the subtle sounds of your breath noises, etc are easily picked up by the mic like this, giving your ballad feeling.
For uptempo songs, back off from the mic. Pretend you're at a really live show and sing away! This will come across great on the mic and save your engineer some hassle of trying to use technology to recreate a natural sound.
Try these techniques and listen to the difference... you might be suprised! Happy Recording!
